MICHAEL HENRY STEER (MICK)
1944 - 2008
In around 1947 Mick came to live in Poynings with his mother Ivy and sisters Betty, Doreen and Jean. He attended
Poynings Village school and later went on to work for Charlton Bros.
He left the village and drove heavy goods vehicles for most of his life. He married Jean in 1967 and daughter Sue
was born in 1968 and son Jason in 1970.
By this time he had started his own haulage business called Steer Haulage. Mick and his family then moved back to
Poynings to Mill Close where Jean is still living today.
Mick was forced to retire from driving lorries due heart problems a few years ago. He began manufacturing motor
cycle racing frames. Steer Frames, as they are known, have been very successful in the sport over the years,
winning many a championship.
Considering Mick disliked school, he did incredibly well to design and build such successful frames. A good many of
these frames are being raced at meetings today both nationally and overseas.
Mick loved living in Poynings and Jean and their family have made many friends in the village over the years. After
a brave fight, Mick died on 21st December of bladder cancer. Many friends from the village attended his funeral on
29th December at Surrey and Sussex Crematorium (Worth). He is greatly missed by all who knew him.

PUMPKIN JOHN
John Mileman bought the land at 3 Acres (just outside the boarder of Poynings ) 15
years ago and slowly and steadily cultivated it until he was sadly killed by a motorist as he worked on the
verge shortly before Christmas.
He was famous for growing pumpkins and usually gave a very large pumpkin to the
Royal Oak every year in aid of charity. He also grew garlic and sunflowers. He let me grow vegetables there
and subsequently Phil and Henri and this year they will be selling vegetables in Poynings. John’s son Paul
and family will continue to grow and sell pumpkins.
John cared much more about people than money .He was always
helping out both friends and strangers. As his daughter in law, Jo, said, ‘John very gently touched the lives of
many people’.
