Hello Poynings,

I like many others started my Family Tree late in life when the family members with all the answers are no longer with us.

Poynings was the main centre of my family the Tylers for the period of time commencing 24 Nov 1873 when Caroline Winter married my great grandfather Henry Walter Tyler in Poynings Church, setting up home at Millbay Cottages, Poynings(now named Pond Bey) and raising 5 sons and 1 daughter. The occupation shown at the time for my great-grandfather was brewery servant.

Frank Tyler born 1886, is named on the memorial to the 1st World War dead in Poynings Church.

Henry Walter Tyler born 1874 and his brother George Oliver Tyler born 1877 lived and worked in Poynings as agricultural labourers and are shown later in the 1911 National Census as single persons living and working at Lancing College Farm.

Frederick James Tyler born 1883, my Grandfather, married Lily Elizabeth Terry in Brighton in 1910 setting up home at Manor Farm Cottages (now known as West Cottage) Poynings, raising their family of 3 sons and 1 daughter. My father being one of the sons Lawrence Frederick George Tyler. In about 1926 they moved house to 11 The Street Pyecombe, the children continuing to attend Poynings School.

Emily Ellen Tyler born 1876,was married at Poynings Church 2nd April 1904 to Charles Hollingdale living at Millbay Cottages, Poynings raising 2 daughters Cecily and Nora.

My Great-grandmother Caroline Winter prior to marrying my Great- grandfather had a son Arthur Winter.

Arthur Winter born 1868, married Ruth Laker 1896 and lived at School Cottages Poynings with his wife Ruth and 3 sons Arthur James Winter born 1898,Frank William Winter born 1899 and Sydney Walter Winter born 1903.

A further family connection, the sister of my Grand-mother, Florence Terry born 1893 married William Richards in 1914 from Poynings and lived in Poynings or Edburton.

In the 1950s when I was living at Pyecombe the family names of Winter,Hollingdale and Richards were still in use within Poynings Village.

Births and Marriages with other facts can all be obtained via the Census Returns, Parish Records etc. What I am hoping is that this letter might reach a family who have retained old photos etc. relating to these families and family homes that will enable me to turn these facts into people.

                   Yours Sincerely,

                   Ron Tyler.

PS I have heard that Nora Hollingdale married Stanley Hillier, another name for my list.
